Mallorca Delicatessen & Viandas de Salamanca

Palma is a city also well known for its many small delicacy stores located on the small streets of the old town. Today me and my friend, visiting from Stockholm, passed by two of my favorites in order to find the perfect ingredients for a beautiful dinner. Mallorca Delicatessen and Viandas de Salamanca.

Mallorca Delicatessen

Palma’s selection of delicacies is on thing you can not miss in this city. While walking around in the streets of Palma you will encounter, the somewhat touristy – but still amazing, Mallorca Delicatessen. The cultural heritage and legacies of Mallorca have at Mallorca Delicatessen been united in a selection of products most closely representative of the island.

chiliMallorca Delicatessen’s products are based on traditional Mallorcan old recipes, handed down from generation to generation. You will find chilies, hams, Spanish sausages, Sobrasada, sea salts and much more. Pay it a visit when you are here – if not to buy anything, it is visually beautiful only for the eye.

I have two favorite products that I want to share with you, two things I always have home, that gives most food that extra touch. I always buy them from Mallorca Delicatessen whenever I run out.

The Mallorca typical chilies are not only a very nice seasoning, but also amazing to look at. I have many of those having in my kitchen, a beautiful contribution of color in the otherwise very white kitchen.

Mallorca Delicatessen’s flavored sea salts are also a favorite of mine. Their salts are harvested on the east cost of Mallorca, at Ses Salines de Llevant – the area stretches from Colonia de Sant Jordi, to the beach of Es Trenc (here is also a great hiking trail – read about it here). The sea salts are completely addictive, but all natural – created from the sun, sea and wind.

Viandas de Salamanca

Viandas de Salamanca is a store dedicated to the distribution and marketing of the best meat products from all of Spain. You will fin the store in the center of Palma’s old town. The store has experience of over 25 years in the meat industry, and if you are going to eat meat – why not choose that best. Viandas de Salamanca offers Viandas hams, sausages, cold cuts and slices – all, the result of a careful and painstaking selection process.

Delicacy dinner in Palma

The dinner turned out amazing – and for this one I do not need to give you instructions. Choose your selection of sausages and cold cut hams (here – lomo, jamon Iberico and fuet). We served the meats with a watermelon salad with feta cheese, asparagus with parmesan cheese, fresh tomatoes and some nice red wine.

Plaza de Cort and Hotel Cort

Plaza de Cort

Plaza de Cort is a square in the center of Palma de Mallorca. One of my absolute favorite squares filled with cozy restaurants and small stores. Plaza de Cort is a famous square in Palma – mostly known for two things. Firstly, Palma’s Baroque-era city court, Consell Insular de Mallroca is located here. This is what has given the square its name – since court is cort in Catalan. Secondly, in the middle of the square is also an old, thick and gnarled olive tree, known to be over 800 years old. The olive tree at Plaza de Cort acts as a natural meeting place for Mallorqins, making it the ideal place for visitors who want to uncover the real Palma, far from the many beach resorts.

Hotel Cort

In the center of this square, in the historic and increasingly cosmopolitan city of Palma is Hotel Cort located. A beautiful, small and boutique hotel where the guests will find themselves in 16 gorgeous rooms and suites designed the urban archeologist Lázaro Rosa-Violán. Hotel Cort is a mix between the old town life in Palma as well as inspired by its proximity to the sea (the closest beach is only a fifteen-minute walk through the old town away).

Hotel Cort’s Mallorquin restaurant also makes it easy for the guests to mingle with locals as well as find new acquaintances in tourists and Palma lovers, dogs and the occasional guitarist strolling by where the kids can run free because the square is (almost) car-free.

Breakfast at Hotel Cort

One of my favorite times at Hotel Cort is their breakfasts. Hotel Cort serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, at their large and and equally beautiful outdoor seating in the middle of Plaza de Cort. You can sit and ponder for hours while sipping café con leche and freshly squeezed orange juice.

A Walk to Portixol

Portixol – the harbor

Portixol is an old harbor, a thirty minute walk from Palma’s old town.

When in Palma you can speak to anyone who live in Portixol, the little fishing village close to town, and you will likely have to listen for a while about how amazing it is. If you decide to walk there – you will realize that the stories were well worth listening too and the small village is beautiful. Portixol is the former fishing village that over the last years has been through significant both improvements and investments. Today, I would say it has become one of Palma’s best hang-outs with many cool places to see and hang out in. Portixol located in a prime location of Palma, since it is so close to both the airport and the city. The village is today a mix of restaurants and small bohemian bars, of both low-key and more luxurious kinds – everything Portixol offer make it a hot-spot for visitors and residents alike.

Portixol lies right on the beach line on the outskirts of Palma, since Portixol is on the coastline there are are also several beaches to choose from, if the weather is nice and you feel like going into the ocean. Since it is just a few kilometers away – the trip offers a beautiful walk – or if you would rather hire a bike. All the way from the cathedral the city of Palma has dedicated a traffic-free promenade right by the ocean. I would call this boardwalk the heart of the community since it provides the area with a free spirited atmosphere loved by pedestrians and bikers as well as inline-skaters and surfers just enjoying the view, waiting for the next set of waves. Along the frontline of Palma’s boardwalk there are also dussins of contemporary bars, cafe’s and restaurants.

Portixol Hotel y Restaurante

Right in the harbor a fantastic hotel and restaurant is located, The Portixol – Hotel y Restaurante. This hotel and restaurant combine old tradition with modern style together with comfort in a very unique and charming way. It is a small and cozy yet super exclusive hotel which is beautifully situated in the Portixol harbor. It offers a wonderful decked restaurant with sea-views where you can choose if you want to eat inside or out and the vibe is cool and trendy. Just go there for a lunch or a dinner or simply just enjoy a cooling drink while enjoying the atmosphere.

All though as mentioned you can find a restaurant to suit any taste in Portixol. Many of the restaurants are particularly famous for their fantastic sea-food. The prices can vary very much – either you will pay a premium for waterfront restaurants or you can hunt out a local tapas bar in the back streets for a bargain bite to eat. Both alternatives are equally nice.

Portixol – History and Culture

Portixol is as mentioned a former fishing village. It is one of many suburbs in Mallorca that have been rejuvenated – both for locals and tourists. There is a high demand on the old, beautiful sea front properties as well as on the former fisherman’s cottages. Potixol is definitely one Mallorca’s coolest spots.

Portixol and things to do

Apart from eating, drinking and enjoying the beach there are a lot of chances to pursue an active lifestyle in Portixol. If you are not a skateboarder or an inline-pro – just hire a bike or a Segway and explore the coast line. Protocol also offer a lively night life – especially during the summer months.

Palma – the place for endless walks

Palma is a city filled with opportunities if you love long walks. The city of Palma provides walks of all kinds, the city is perfectly sized for just walking around on the small and beautiful pedestrian streets. Surrounded by historical sights, restaurants, shopping and art galleries, walking in Palma is a very pleasurable way of exploring the city.

Palma streets

The small and picturesque streets of Palma never leave you unsatisfied just walking around the Old Town – sometimes for hours without even noticing. Palma’s Old Town offers everything from shopping – at luxury well-known stores as well as in smaller local shops – and art galleries to fancy restaurants, cozy bars and cooling gelato stalls.

If you are at all interested in architecture there is even more to explore. While strolling around the streets of Palma make sure to stop and look at the fasads of the houses – the typical apartments in Palma’s Old town have beautiful windows and balconies with shutters. Many of the older houses also have bay windows in beautiful designs and glass in different nature close colors. While you are at it keep in mind to stop and admire all the churches, there are almost one on every other block and on the squares around them often nice cafés, restaurants or places for a glass of Cava together with a tapa or two.

In the Old Town of Palma there are as mentioned numerous places to see and even more things to do. If you are only here for a short while there are a few places you should not and cannot miss. Palma’s main landmark and a must if your on a city walk in the Old Town is the fourteenth century Cathedral, the Sa Seu Gothic Cathedral. A majestic cathedral, aligned with all Palma architecture, built in yellow sandstone – looking over the beautiful Mediterranean bay. Just standing close to it is enough to get an idea of the masterpiece that was built by men centuries ago.
